My aunty once said “there is so much freedom in flat cloth”
True, it can be used to wrap, hide, mend, keep warm… many things. For its simplicity.
Here we have a selection of free cloth of kimono silk fabric woven at Arakei Orimono, Chichibu, Saitama.
The width is 41 cm, as the unified measure for kimono weaving, but each one’s lengths are varied. One piece of kimono usually takes 13m of silk fabric in length. And, sometimes, there are some that are just short for kimono purposes. Arakei Orimono does not waste any, but they kindly share some of such fabric with Wisdom Toolkit.
What would you make out of this cloth full of freedom?
Cushion covers, wrapping for your precious items, stitching up little furoshiki bags… all sounds good. What I like to do with flat, free, cloth when I welcome them at home is to hang them on the wall. Whether framed or not, let them sit in the space like a piece of art. Sometimes an idea comes to me what to make of it while looking at them.
Arakei Orimono uses A-grade silk threads which they custom order; the kind, thinness, and number of spins… all are customised so as to achieve the texture they strive to achieve.
Their weaving method takes hold of the local tradition. Chichibu Meisen, Hogushi ori, which allows bold colours and patterns with warm hand-crafted touch. Their textile uniquely showcases ever-transient colours, depending on the lighting and the angle you hold it in your hands.
I hope you feel its texture at your fingertips and enjoy incorporating a piece of exquisite kimono fabric in your everyday setting.
