Aspiration as high as Mt Fuji.

Pure as river water

To my beloved three princesses

(Adressed to his three granddaughters.

At the back, it says “Be a good person like your mother and father. Your grandfather is keeping healthy, too,” written by a pencil.)

There I am, slipping off my grandfather Rikizo’s knee, with an expression that’s hard to describe.
His hands holding me appear… almost awkward. My mother scribbled a note on the back: “Wearing the hat grandpa just bought.”

My grandfather passed away when I was in elementary school.
Faint childhood memories have since been layered with stories shared by family, former apprentices, and neighbours. Over time, my image of Rikizo has become, and is becoming, more vivid than ever.

There’s one thing all these stories seem to share: they often begin with laughter.
Like the time he took a cold medicine commercial literally. “Three sneezes? Three pills of Lulu,” it said, so he determined the dose by how many times someone sneezed.
Poet Makoto Ohka once wrote that even his tales of hardship were transformed into stories of exquisite humour.

Rikizo believed in cultivating both skill and spirit. In fact, I think he believed one could not be refined without the other.
During this exhibition, I hope to share his philosophy through his works, calligraphy, and stories I collected.
